Speed on a Saudi phone: what actually slows an online store (and what we measure)
Mohamad Hamza, founder of Mask UP ·
Many of your visitors are on a phone, on a mobile network, in a hurry. "Speed" to them is one thing: how long until the product and the price are on the screen. This is how we measure it, and what commonly causes the wait.
How we measure
We load the page on a simulated mobile connection with a slowed-down CPU, three times, and report the middle result. One fast load proves nothing; one slow load may be the network. The middle result is what we show, with the conditions written next to it.
1) Image weight
A common cause. A 3 MB hero photo on a page viewed on a phone is a wait every visitor pays. We list the heaviest images with their size and the size they could be after compression.
2) Too many images, too small
The opposite problem on product pages: eight tiny thumbnails that do not show the product, each a separate request. We count the product images and their displayed size.
3) Buttons too small to tap
A page can load quickly and still feel slow when the visitor misses the button twice. We measure the size of the controls a shopper has to tap and flag the ones smaller than a fingertip.
4) Apps and scripts on every page
On Shopify, Salla and Zid, each installed app may load code on every page. The measurement shows the total; the fix is removing what you no longer use.
